Which dogs should you use Stripping stones and knives on?
Wire-haired dogs and spaniels need stripping knives and stripping stones, as they effectively remove loose hair at the root. It is therefore also necessary that you check whether the dog is ready to be trimmed. You can easily do this by pulling loosely at the outer hairs, and if they are easy to pull off, then your dog is ready to be trimmed.
With us you will find different trimming knives and trimming stones that are suitable for different coats. This will be stated on each tool, so you can be sure that you get the right trimmer.
When should you not use Stripping knives and stones?
There are always differences between dogs, and even if your dog falls into the rough-haired category, it may well be that a stripping knife is not for you. It may also be that you have had difficulty trimming; this may be because the dog's coat is too wet, which means the coat becomes too soft. A sterilized or neutered dog can also have changes in its coat, which makes it difficult with trimming knives and trimming stones. If you have clipped the dog first, it may also be difficult to trim. This is because the structure of the coat changes. To have a good trimming coat, you almost always have to be able to save it.
How often should you use trimming knives or trimming stones on your dog?
It varies greatly from dog to dog. Some dogs' hair grows faster than others, but one thing you should always make sure of is that you don't do it too early. It can hurt your dog if you trim too early. It is very normal to trim 3-4 times a year, but for some dogs it will be more often and less for others. You should be able to feel on your own dog's coat whether it needs a trim or whether you should wait.
Get your dog used to grooming knives and grooming stones
It is always important, no matter what type of grooming you use, that your dog is comfortable with it. That is why we also suggest that you take your time with it, as early in your dog's life as possible. A lot of treats is definitely a good idea, especially if the dog tends to be insecure in new situations. You should always make sure that the dog feels comfortable with you, which is why you should start slowly and steadily when using trimming knives and trimming stones. Once your dog has gotten used to the situation, you can be sure that it will be a good experience for both of you in the future.
